The three women shared a prolonged glance, but it was Lauren who broke the ensuing silence.
âThatâs not possible,â she said. âJeff is too well protected.â
âThink outside the box,â Nate said.
âPerhaps he has a point,â said Melanie tentatively. âWeâre not being very inventive.â
âYou said yourself that youâd like to do more to hurt him,â Sophie added.
Lauren snapped. It was bad enough that Nate had followed her here. Now he was doling out crazy suggestions like confetti and already had her friends eating out of his capable hands. The man had totally perplexed her. She didnât need him in her life, didnât entirely trust his motives but couldnât stop thinking about him. He made her feel safe in ways that she had forgotten were possible and opening up to him seemed like the most natural thing in the world, even though it filled her with anger and shame whenever she admitted just how naïve she had actually been.
She wanted to trust him but couldnât⦠well, trust her own judgement when it came to men. Jeff had completely taken her in. Was Nate attempting to do the same thing for the sake of a scoop? She didnât really know much about him and couldnât corroborate what he had told her. Then again, he had resources and a better plan than their feeble one to draw Jeff out. Perhaps she should stop analysing everything to death and go with the flow.
At least for now.
âThis might come as a big surprise to you,â she said, glowering at him, not yet ready to cede control. âBut Iâve done nothing else but think about revenging myself on Jeff bloody Williams for three years. If there was any other way to get at him, donât you think it would have occurred to me by now? Contrary to what you obviously think of me, Iâm not completely stupid.â
Her scathing comments merely served to amuse him. âBut youâre not using that brain of yours either.â
âI beg your pardon!â
âLike I said, youâre not looking at the bigger picture. If we play him right, then his greed will be his undoing.â
âFeeding him insider information wonât work, if thatâs what youâre thinking,â Lauren said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. âTheyâve tightened up their auditing procedures for reasons that escape me. No one at Whytelakeâs can sneeze nowadays without the FCA crawling all over them. The company took a big hit by way of fines and are, a bit like me, I suppose, now on probation.â
âBesides,â added Sophie, âif he has all the money that he made Lauren steal, why would he want more?â
âPeople like him never have enough. Money is power. Besides, if he forked out to have two people murdered, that will have made a big dent in his stash.â
âBut I still donât see howââ
âWe create a situation that will tempt him,â Nate said, talking over Laurenâs interruption. âIf he heard of a potentially good investment, how would he check it out?â
âThe Internet,â said Lauren and Melanie together.
âAnd the financial press, I should think,â added Sophie.
